Isabel, a young Californian, arrives in Paris to join her sister Roxy. She is pregnant with her French husband, Charles-Henri de Persand, who has just left Roxy for another woman and wants a quick divorce. Roxy, for her part, resists the divorce but is eventually persuaded by those close to her. Meanwhile, Isabel finds love in the arms of a married French diplomat who happens to be the uncle of Roxy's soon-to-be ex. What follows is a social scandal in which the Walker sisters' American idealism and passion collide with the sophistication and stubborn rationalism of the Persands.
