Petrie was born in New York City, New York, the son of Dorothea (née Grundy), a television producer, actor, and novelist, and Daniel Petrie, a director.  Petrie has acted and guest-starred on television programs. His first directorial job was on the set of The Equalizer, a private detective TV series, in 1985. Since, he has directed films such as Mystic Pizza (1988), Grumpy Old Men (1993), The Favor (1994), Richie Rich (1994), The Associate (1996), Miss Congeniality (2000), How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), Welcome to Mooseport (2004), Just My Luck (2006) and My Life in Ruins (2009). At 14, Ron Palillo (born Ronald Gabriel Paolillo) started his own summer theater in Cheshire, Connecticut. His parents, Gabriel and Carmel Paolillo, were surprised when the summer theater actually made money. After graduating from high school, Ron went to the University of Connecticut at Storrs, where he majored in drama. He appeared in many school plays in college. After graduation, Ron got a job with a touring company which performed in Shakespearean plays. He claimed to have received invaluable drama training during that tour, acting in Shakespearean masterpieces like "Macbeth", "The Taming of the Shrew" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream". After his Shakespearean tour, Ron became a member of a repertory company in Miami, Florida. Shortly after arriving in New York, Ron got a role in the off-Broadway success "Hot l Baltimore." He stayed with the show for over a year. Because of his work in "Hot L Baltimore". Ron was given a lead role in a musical special, "The Last Sweet Days of Isaac", on television. After Isaac, he once again went on tour and appeared with Mickey Rooney in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and with Jan Sterling in a serious play, "Summer Brave". He has two brothers and a sister. His elder brother, Richard Paolillo, is an eye surgeon, his brother Robert Paolillo, is a salesman and his sister Ann, became a teacher.

He is best known for his role as Dean Portman, one of the "Bash Brothers" in The Mighty Ducks movies. He has also appeared in the movie-musicals Newsies as Mush, and in Rent, in which he played an AIDS patient and sang the songs "Life Support" and "Will I?" He had also been seen as Matt in Bare, a Pop Opera and in various roles in Michael John LaChiusa's See What I Wanna See. In 2000, he starred as Micky Dolenz in the VH1 TV-movie Daydream Believers: The Monkees' Story.He provided the singing voice for Max in A Goofy Movie. He attended UCLA and graduated in 2000. He was also the Dancing Boy in Deniece Williams' music video for the song "Let's Hear It for the Boy". He is also in the British television advertisement for Carlsberg Beer. Lohr has also appeared in many Sister Sister episodes, better known as Marlon in his later appearances in the show.
